Chillicothe, OH is home to several beautiful parks, including city, county, and state parks. There are many miles of biking trails, but that's not what we love most about what this great city offers. We love how easy it is to access hiking trails designed for all sorts of fitness levels. Today, we're looking at some of our favorite trails in the area. 1. Shawnee Ridge Loop One of the best shared-use loop trails within driving distance of Chillicothe is Shawnee Ridge Loop at Great Seal State Park, conveniently located at 4908 Marietta Rd. This extensive loop trail is excellent for training for a big race or challenging upcoming hike due to its frequent elevation changes. This is a great trail to tackle in the summer due to the shade on the trail. We recommend taking this loop clockwise, so you overcome the toughest obstacles full of energy. If you go counterclockwise around the loop, you will be faced with a massive hill that may be daunting at the end of a long, hilly hike. more 2. Hoggard Trail Another one of our favorite trails is the Hoggard Trail at Buzzard's Roost Nature Preserve. Buzzard's Roost preserves over 1,100 acres of land and features incredibly rugged landscapes. Parking near the Hoggard Trail trailhead is located at 514 Red Bird Ln. If you hike this entire trail, you will be rewarded with several stunning views. You will pass over a footbridge, and you can see blooming daffodils and other plants. You will also find several benches along the trail that you can rest on. 3. Ross Hollow Hiking Trail The Ross Hollow Hiking Trail at Tar Hollow State Park is great. You can access this state park by plugging 16396 Tar Hollow Rd into your favorite map app on your smartphone. It can connect via Bluetooth to the Infotainment 3 system in your 2024 Chevy Trax, so you can see and hear directions without worrying about your phone. The trailhead for the Ross Hollow Hiking Trail loop can be found in the Ross Hollow camp area, and it grants access to the gorgeous Tar Hollow hills. This trail is beautiful year-round. However, we recommend not checking this trail out if it has rained recently. The trail can become muddy, making it harder to ascend the steep inclines through the hills. With a new Chevy, there are lots of wonderful hiking and multi-use trails that you can enjoy in the Chillicothe area. With the gently flowing waters of the Scioto River passing through town, the nearby glinting waters of scenic Ross Lake, and many other creeks and ponds in the area, you're never far from fish-filled water in a naturally beautiful environment. Yoctangee Park This gorgeous 48-acre park in the heart of town has a very pretty lake to stroll around, feed the ducks, marvel at the swans, and settle beside for a few hours of fishing. Ross Lake is a great place for catching bass and bluegills. You can find a secluded spot to fish by the shore or push out into the center of the lake on a boat. One reason local fans of fishing love this lake is the lovely natural scenery. It's a picturesque natural environment with a calm and soothing ambiance and plenty of wildlife. If you're lucky, you may even see a bald eagle diving for fish. The lake is located at Chillicothe, OH 45601. You can get there by following Blacksmith Hill Road to the east of town before turning off onto West Hydell Road. Kinnikinnick Wildlife Area One of the best places to fish in the Scioto River is the Kinnikinnick Wildlife Area a short drive to the north. This charming forested area is teeming with wildlife, both in and out of the water. You can while away many happy hours here catching catfish, crappies, bluegills, and smallmouth bass, which often reach considerable size. While there, you might also catch sight of grey squirrels, whitetail deer, cottontail rabbits, ducks, geese, mallards, and eagles. The wildlife area is situated on Orr Road, U.S. Route 23. The six-mile drive there takes you through some very attractive scenery. Millennium Grove The seven-acre Millennium Grove is a stand of more than 100 trees donated to the town by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2000 to celebrate the new millennium. The 40 species of trees that grow here are each marked with a signpost with information on the species and historical value. The trees include a silver maple from Harry Truman's farm, a descendant of the 300-year-old national champion Kentucky coffeetree, an Ohio Buckeye, the state tree, trees connected to the wife of President Taft, the Wright Brothers and Neil Armstrong, and a willow linked to Napoleon and Andrew Johnson. more 2. Yoctangee Park The picturesque Yoctangee Park at Enderlin Circle spreads over 48 acres along the tree-lined shores of the scenic Scioto River. Here you can play softball, baseball, tennis, frisbee golf, and pickleball, bike along the path, wet your hook, and enjoy a peaceful picnic under the trees on the banks of the river. The little ones have one of the state's best accessible playgrounds and ample space to run around and play on the rolling green lawns. The park is also home to the former pumping station of the Chillicothe Water and Sewer Company, a beautiful building listed in the National Register of Historic Places constructed in 1882, which now serves as the Pump House Center of the Arts. 3. Yoctangee Park Annex Yoctangee Park Annex on North Park Drive is separated from Yoctangee Park by the floodwall protection levy and the Pedestrian and Bikeway Corridor and offers more than 40 acres of recreation. Yoctangee Park Annex is Chillicothe's largest athletic complex, boasting ten softball fields and six soccer fields. There is also a shelter house, restrooms, a boat ramp, and plenty of excellent fishing spots along the river's banks. 4. The Catherine and Holden Corzine Memorial Dog Park The one-acre Catherine and Holden Corzine Memorial Dog Park along Yoctangee Parkway opened four years ago and is the first dog park in the town's history. It's a popular off-leash spot for waggers, big and small, with separate areas and six-foot-high fences where they can safely stretch their legs. The park has water fountains, some especially for pooches, dog waste stations, plenty of tennis balls to chase, benches in the shade, and a bike path. We love seeing everyone come out to enjoy the summer activities in Chillicothe, OH. We have another busy year of community events happening for 2023. Here are some of the activities we're most looking forward to. 1. Ross County Fair The 2023 Ross County Fair will be happening from August 5th to August 12th. Summer in Chillicothe wouldn't be complete without this big event. For many of us, this is the chance to catch up with family and friends as we stroll the fairgrounds. The big event is located at 344 Fairgrounds Road here in Chillicothe. Parking is free, and there are signs to direct you. It can get fairly busy in the lot. You'll appreciate how much easier the rearview camera in your 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer makes parking. more 2. Old Fashioned Cruise In Igniters Street Rods is hosting an old-fashioned cruise-in event at 1124 East Main Street. This event is happening on Friday, June 16th at 6:00 pm. It's free to attend and there will be door prizes including a 50/50 raffle. It will happen, rain or shine. You can expect to walk around, see old cars, and listen to music from the 1950s and 1960s. This should be a nice Friday evening downtown and a chance to see beloved classic vehicles. 3. Free Summer Movie Series Individuals and families are welcome to come to Danbarry Cinemas on Thursdays at 10:00 am this summer. They will be playing free movies, and it's recommended that you show up 30 minutes early to get a seat. Concessions will be open and outside food and drinks are not allowed. The theater is located at 119 Pawnee Road. This series starts on June 8th and runs through July 27th. Titles include Kung Fu Panda, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, The Bad Guys, Harry Potter, and DC's League of SuperPets. Then they will play Minions The Rise of Gru and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. The final Thursday will end the series with Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank. 4. 2023 Half Marathon & 5K Sunday, June 4th at 8:00 am marks the start of the Half Marathon. The race begins downtown at 1 N Paint St. There will be activities happening before and after the marathon, so it's a great time to stroll downtown. The runners will receive a race route and an event shirt. Attendees will have a fun Sunday mingling as they cheer the runners on. There are so many great activities to drive to this time of year. They've also got a special kids' menu with a burger, pork, or chicken sandwich, or a cheese quesadilla. more Fire and Stone Pizzeria On some days, only pizza will do, and some of the best pizza, and the coolest atmosphere in town, could just be at Fire and Stone at 98 N Paint St. For the adults, there are some really delicious (and elegant) woodfired pizzas. Try The Philly or the delicious quattro formaggio. The kids, though, will particularly love the cheese bread and the pizza rolls, which you should order in large quantities. They've also got some other really kid-friendly and interesting offerings, like Parmesan tater tots. This is a very clean place that sometimes has live music and is always family friendly. Carl's Townhouse Carl's is an institution. They've been a part of our community for more than 80 years, and they offer an old-fashioned diner breakfast experience you won't want to miss. Find them at 95 W 2nd St. They open for breakfast at 7:30 AM during the week, at 7 AM on Saturday, and at 8 AM on Sunday. They are closed on Mondays. We would not want to steer you away from their delicious lunch sandwiches; however, breakfast is the thing here, and especially with kids. On the weekends, breakfast is served all day. Their pancakes are delicious, they do a great Belgian waffle, and their chicken and waffle is a big hit. The biscuits and gravy are awesome, too.
