Nearly 2000 years ago, American Indians constructed numerous ceremonial mounds and earthen enclosures in the southern region of Ohio, used for almost 400 years for feasts, funerals, and rituals. Visit the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park at 16062 State Route 104 in Chillicothe, which covers six earthworks and protects the ancient relics of a once-thriving culture that lived here between 200 B.C. and A.D. 500.

The most impressive sites, many of which were built on a grand scale, feature earthworks shaped in squares, circles, and other geometric shapes with earthen walls reaching up to 12 feet tall and outlining shapes over 1,000 feet across.

2. Tecumseh!

Enjoy a unique theatre experience every summer with Tecumseh! on the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre’s outdoor stage at 5968 Marietta Road in Chillicothe. Get cozy under a blanket of twinkling stars and watch astounding battle sequences unfold before your eyes with stampedes of horses galloping past and military cannons roaring to life.

Many of the original Worthington furnishings are still in the mansion, giving visitors a glimpse into the family’s life. The property spans over 300 acres and includes five outbuildings and beautiful formal gardens with far-flung views of the Scioto River valley and the Logan Range, which inspired the Great Seal of Ohio.
