Three dogs at a park.

Chillicothe, OH, has many scenic green spaces along the Scioto River, with rolling green lawns, trees creating ample shade, and even a lovely place where your four-legged friend can stretch his legs unleashed. Load your picnic blanket, family, friends, and pup in the Chevrolet Traverse or Buick Encore to enjoy a few relaxing hours at the lovely parks below.

1. Millennium Grove

The seven-acre Millennium Grove is a stand of more than 100 trees donated to the town by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2000 to celebrate the new millennium. The trees, planted in seven glades, have significant ancestry, each related to a person, place, or historical event representing American presidents, famous people, and the Civil War.

The 40 species of trees that grow here are each marked with a signpost with information on the species and historical value. The trees include a silver maple from Harry Truman’s farm, a descendant of the 300-year-old national champion Kentucky coffeetree, an Ohio Buckeye, the state tree, trees connected to the wife of President Taft, the Wright Brothers and Neil Armstrong, and a willow linked to Napoleon and Andrew Johnson.

2. Yoctangee Park

The picturesque Yoctangee Park at Enderlin Circle spreads over 48 acres along the tree-lined shores of the scenic Scioto River. Here you can play softball, baseball, tennis, frisbee golf, and pickleball, bike along the path, wet your hook, and enjoy a peaceful picnic under the trees on the banks of the river. The little ones have one of the state’s best accessible playgrounds and ample space to run around and play on the rolling green lawns.

The park is also home to the former pumping station of the Chillicothe Water and Sewer Company, a beautiful building listed in the National Register of Historic Places constructed in 1882, which now serves as the Pump House Center of the Arts.

3. Yoctangee Park Annex

Yoctangee Park Annex on North Park Drive is separated from Yoctangee Park by the floodwall protection levy and the Pedestrian and Bikeway Corridor and offers more than 40 acres of recreation. Yoctangee Park Annex is Chillicothe’s largest athletic complex, boasting ten softball fields and six soccer fields. There is also a shelter house, restrooms, a boat ramp, and plenty of excellent fishing spots along the river’s banks.

4. The Catherine and Holden Corzine Memorial Dog Park

The one-acre Catherine and Holden Corzine Memorial Dog Park along Yoctangee Parkway opened four years ago and is the first dog park in the town’s history. It’s a popular off-leash spot for waggers, big and small, with separate areas and six-foot-high fences where they can safely stretch their legs. The park has water fountains, some especially for pooches, dog waste stations, plenty of tennis balls to chase, benches in the shade, and a bike path.

When it comes to spending time outside in the fresh air, you’re spoiled for choice with many beautiful, well-maintained green spaces offering plenty of outdoor fun. While you’re out and about, drop by Coughlin GM of Chillicothe today to look at the range of new models on display.
